Redundancy happens when employers need to reduce their workforce and it is a form of dismissal. Selection for redundancy needs to be carried out fairly and reasonably. An employee who is being made redundant might be eligible for certain rights including consultation with the employer, option to move into a different position within the organisation, notice period, time off to find a new job and redundancy pay.

If selection for redundancy is on the basis of one of the protected characteristics including disability, sex, gender, age etc. then this could be classified as an unfair dismissal.
